How will I know it when I see it? -

Promotion and Interventions

We will be coming to grade level meetings to talk about the data they are reviewing on the students who are struggling and will receive the promotion and intervention letter. Let us know when your team will be meeting in the next two weeks, so admin will be involved in the discussion.

School Improvement Plan

Clipper Behavior Support Team will be meeting this Friday, February 3rd to discuss our school climate goal and identify areas of need to improve our school climate and culture. The academic team will also be meeting soon to discuss our literacy focus.

Leapin’ into Literacy

Lead Team discussed February 29th’s OCE Leap Into Literacy Night. It will be from 6:00-7:30, with the PTA starting off the night. It has been great to hear the grade level teams' ideas for encouraging love of reading with our students.

Common Core – Math Strands

See Kathy’s email about details of the first 3 (of 8) math strands. Please use some of your PLT or grade level time to discuss the changes in the math curriculum for next school year. Be on the look out for an email from Kathy that will detail the other 5 strands.

School / Work Hours

Be sure that you are at your doors ready to meet your students at 8:45 or if you are not a classroom teacher out and about to monitor students in the hallway. Also, be sure that you are on campus until after the last bus has left the station (this is typically at 4:00). Please see Nanette or Travis if you need to come in late or leave early.

“Jan. 17, 2012 - If you are (have)a parent wanting to choose a new school for your child to attend next year, the new school choice selection process begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17. The first round of the choice selection period runs until Friday, Feb. 24. Promotion and Interventions

We will be coming to grade level meetings to talk about the data they are reviewing on the students who are struggling and will receive the promotion and intervention letter. Let us know when your team will be meeting in the next two weeks, so admin will be involved in the discussion.

PLT Facilitators Meeting

Grade level PLT Facilitators will be having a two hour work session on (Monday January 23rd) on supporting OCE Professional Learning Teams. We will be discussing agendas (what are items to discuss), strategies to delegate work/tasks, hold each other accountable, and other topics are brought by the team. Thank you to all of our WONDERFUL teacher assistants that will provide teacher coverage at this time.

You Tube

Please be sure that students are closely monitored when they are on the computer, especially when they are searching or viewing on-line. One example at OCE (and at other WCPSS schools) is YouTube. Students are able to access videos (non-educational) that are not appropriate for their viewing pleasures. Please be diligent in making sure to redirect them. Alternate for student viewing - http://www.teachertube.com/.

BYOD - Bring your own device

This question has been brought up many people and it is a great idea – “can students bring
in their own electronic devices to be used for their learning. Such devices are (not limited to)Nooks, Kindles, IPADS,
etc. As of right now, the answer is no, but we are getting more feedback and information from tech service here is their
email response – “Staff in Academics and Technology Services are beginning the process of BYOD. There will need to be minimum
requirements set for devices as well as policy updates -
not to mention a curriculum that provides effective use”. Athena C. Kellogg

Briarcliff Open House

Wednesday, 1/18, will work for using Briarcliff's facilities for the student assignment informational meeting for OCE’s Hispanic families living in Cary. We will be meeting from 6:00-7:00, including time on the computers for those needing to use them. We hope our OCE families will not need to use the computers and return to Olive Chapel, but we do want them to make an informed choice.

Marines Miles to Afghanistan

Join us as we kick-off “2d Battalion, 6th Marines Miles to Afghanistan”. As our Marines and Sailors deployed for 7 months, let's make a goal to see which company (all family members invited to participate) can accomplish 14,440 miles first. 14,440 miles is how many miles it takes round trip from Camp Lejeune, NC, to Afghanistan. - reporting progress is v26weapscompany@gmail.com. Also put my son's name Cpl Duke Matthew B. and your relationship with Matt. (state that you are a family friend:-). See Pam Duke’s email for specifics.

Week of January 9th - January 13th

Request for Transfer/Druthers Form

Today, you will be able to access the link to ‘Request a Transfer” for the 2012-13 school year. http://www2.wcpss.net/departments/hr/transfer_form.htm I realize this is a very important decision that is made for a variety of reasons. As a teacher I remember this was something I shared with my principal so that there were no surprises when they received the list of those requesting a transfer or a call from the other principal concerning an interview.

The “Druther’s form for next year is also attached to the Captain’s Log today. The form is due Friday, January 27. This will give all tracks time to consider the multiple options on the form and get the form back to me either by e-mail or in an envelope outside my office.

Each of you is a valued member of the OCE staff. Your passion for children is evident each day when I walk down the halls and listen to you teach. For some of you the decision for next year is very easy, for some this is a time of transition and brings about difficult decisions. Please know that if you need to talk my door is always open to listen.

Superintendent’s Visit

THANK YOU!!!

Thank you to all of you for being you! Last Monday, Mr. Tata visited our school. Travis and I had the opportunity to talk with Mr. Tata prior to his tour of the school and interacting with several of you and our students. I wanted to let you know one statement of the many he made during our walk “I really like seeing the work the student’s do out in the hall, especially when it is meaningful. Instead of store bought stuff.” I wanted you to know how sometimes it’s the “little” things that make the biggest difference. Thank you for taking the time to highlight what our students are doing! You know if Mr. Tata noticed, our current parents notice and possible parents do as well.

Aims Web (Data Discussion)

(winter assessments) should be completed by January 10th for all tracks. This would be a great data collection to discussion during your PLT meetings. Pete will be sending out Aims Web Reports, so be on the look out.

Who grew, who didn’t show as much growth, what can we do to support these students?
