Captain's Log #10 Sept 4-7

THANK YOU!

Last week I felt like we were on the ship in the Muppet Treasure Island video, working together in a storm of late buses and upset families. OK...no one was singing from the top of the Crow's Nest, however, there were times I thought I was going to order us a "midnight buffet".

We were all together on the ship of "getting the kids home SAFELY". Thank you for staying late and keeping a positive attitude with the students and families, as we met the challenges of the Transportation Dept. rerouting of our buses!  Thank you to our colleagues who were on Bus and Carpool Duty last week. Also, to our "bouncers", and those who filled in in the office.

I received an e-mail Friday evening (8-31) with NEW routes...actually our OLD routes, which will be implemented this week.  Hopefully, dismissal will go more smoothly and all will be back to normal.

Few lessons learned during this event... new definitions of "late bus" and "walkers"...3:15 applies to everyone but me...people express themselves loudly and with phonemically correct words.  That said, the most important lesson the community learned..WE PUT the SAFETYof OUR STUDENTS FIRST and WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM!  You are the BEST!

Celebrations

Tuesday, September 4, the Board of Education will receive, (and hopefully approve) the recommendation for our new Assistant Principal.  We will have a staff meeting at 8:00 AM, in the Media Center on Wednesday, September 5 to meet our newest Clipper!

New Staff:

Welcome Terry Lynch!  Terry is our new AUII teacher.  His journey here has been full of ups and downs, but he made it!  He comes to us by way of New York. (I can hear a few of you cheering loudly!)  Joining Terry is his son Jack, who is beginning his school career as a Clipper!

Jill Pitino is also joining us as an AUII teacher assistant.  She is coming to us by way of Baucom Elementary.

We say good-bye to Michelle D'Antonoli and Cathy Howard.  We wish them well as they move to Davis Dr. Elementary and Apex HS respectively.

SIP: Updates and Needs

Cafe Committee:
Teachers:  The Daily 5 survey needs to be completed by Friday.  The Cafe Committee did not have reliable data since it was incomplete.  Congratulations to 3rd grade for ALL teachers completing the survey when it was first sent out on 8/17. Below is the info and link.  Thank you for completing the survey now.

Hey everyone!

The Cafe Committee has developed a quick (I promise!) survey in google docs that will help us plan for future professional development. Please take 5 (or less!) minutes as soon as possible to complete this survey!

The Cafe Committee

Team Time Committee

Jeff will be sending out the survey for Team Time.  Please make certain it is completed by the due date.

Technology Update:

Christie Vereckey attended an IPad professional development Saturday 8/25, and was able to arrange for the trainer to come to OCE last Wednesday.  After several hours, our IPads have been reconfigured and updated! This enables us to be more efficient and effective when we use our current IPads. This will also enable us to set up any new IPads more quickly in the future. He was also able to get the Apple TV working correctly!  This is one more step our Technology Plan becoming a reality.

Substitutes

We will have a 21st Century substitute this week.  Please make certain to provide a grade level plan to me for her to use during the week.  Jeff contacted Andy and got his plans from last year, however, they included access to technology which had been removed from the classroom at the beginning of the year.

Media Substitute--Our substitute for media was unable to return for all four days this week.  She will be here on Thursday and Friday.  Our new Media Specialist will attend Orientation on September 10 and begin at OCE on September 11!

Short Week...

Please look at the Specials schedule and begin the week with the TUESDAY schedule.

Landlubbers: 3rd-5th grade

We have close to 150 Landlubbers this year! Anyone who would like to get is shape is encouraged to come out and help. :)

Just a few reminders from Rachael and me...

1- Students were given a contract last week. Please place them in Rachael's mailbox as they are returned.

2- Teachers will receive a sign in sheet each Tuesday so the runners can sign in before leaving your room. A few students were not supposed to stay last week and with the buses being delayed etc. it was a bit hard for those on the field to figure things out and have Landlubbers.

3. If your student is not dressed properly, for example, flip flops- please have them go to the office and call home during their lunch. They must be dressed properly in order to stay. Also during lunch or another good time, please make sure water bottles are full. Our runners like to leave the field to fill them. (If we see a pattern of students coming to the office who are not dressing properly for Landlubbers, Mrs. Lavery will have a conversation with their parents concerning their ability to continue with Landlubbers.)

4. We will be closing our googledoc as soon as track 2 gets back. Please let families know in your newsletters to register online if they would like their child to participate. They can enroll late, we would just need to send out another form.

Track 1 is tracking out on September 11.  Please consider helping out with Landlubbers.  We could always begin a staff Landlubbers challenge. :)

PLEASE SEND THE FOLLOWING IN AN EMAIL TO YOUR PARENTS TODAY

LANDLUBBER PICK UP

Parents,
When picking up your child from Landlubbers at 4:45, please use the carpool lanes, until further notice.

We want to keep the bus loop only for buses as they arrive on campus. All students in the YMCA program will report to the Y at 4:45.

Thanks so much,
Landlubbers

Have a fantastic week!
